About The Project

One of the key venues for the 2004 Athens Summer Olympic Games was the 8,000 seat Handball and Taekwondo arena. This facility is the cornerstone of the redevelopment of the Faliron Bay area. The goal was to create a landmark facility that serves the local community and acts as a "beacon" in attracting the public to the redeveloped waterfront.

Sport Concepts led the local team of designers and working with TPA Architects, developed this unique facility. The Olympic overlay was the major design parameter, yet the facility is designed to convert to a community event centre in the post Olympic configuration.

After the Olympics 4,000 spectator seats were removed and a number of "community rooms" were constructed on the main concourse. The remaining 4,000 spectator seats are installed on telescoping platforms offering total flexibility in rapidly configuring the building for a variety sports, entertainment, and exhibition activities.
