Venue: Budapest Velodrome
Commission: design competition
Sport Concepts produced this design for a new 3,000
seat velodrome in Budapest.
The excitement of sports in general, and cycling in particular, is communicated through the dynamic flowing colourful form of the building. The swirling vortex of cycle wheels is mimicked in the structure of the roof and the movement of spectators inside the building can be seen from the outside through the translucent PTFE cladding.
Spectators approach and enter the Velodrome from the southwest corner. They pass between the restored grandstand building and track embankment, through the old track and onto a landscaped entry plaza. Passing into a triple height glazed atrium, spectators have the option of moving onto the sports floor field of play or travelling on escalators up to the spectator circulation concourse.
The concourse is sized to accommodate the seating expansion from 800 seats to 1,500 and again, for major events to 3,000 seats.
